Module Objectives

1. Start learning band tunes, consolidating the Tune Learning Strategy.
2. Open the chanter reed and practice starting and stopping bagpipes.
3. Explore further concepts behind sound, music and tuning.

Skills

• Understand typical tune structures – parts, repeats, phrases, sub-phrases
• Learn four band tunes
• Develop tune memorisation skills
• Correctly blow and care for the chanter reed
• Understand compound time and the difference from simple time
• Play additional embellishments
• Understand about starting the drones/pipes in time, and stopping cleanly

Progression

At the end of this module you will be asked to perform a simple tune, with embellishments, to your tuition group. Because the next module includes more tunes to learn, you will need to demonstrate good progress on learning the four tunes introduced in this module.

Duration

There is no set duration. This module can be done at your own pace but generally takes from 8 to 12 weeks.
